Going around the world is not a trip to be taken lightly. It is important to plan well, to have sufficient financial reserves and to be prepared for the unexpected. For this reason, many travelers try to find out how much a world tour costs.

To help you in your planning of a globetrotting adventure, we have investigated the average budget of a world tour. Between the various expenses you’ll need to budget for before and during your stay, the daily costs in each country, and your travel style, here’s a global idea of what it will cost you to wander the world.

How much does a world tour cost? The price rangeIt

is

difficult to give a typical budget for a trip around

the world.

Indeed, some people will travel for almost nothing by walking, biking or hitchhiking and camping or asking for the hospitality of the locals while others will opt for a much more comfortable world tour by taking many flights, renting or buying a vehicle and staying in nice hotels. However, after a long documentary research, we were able to identify a median budget of 15,000 euros per person for 12 months of travel.

This budget can vary depending on the type of travel, the countries visited and the desired pace, but in general, travelers have a budget that can range from 8,000 to 20,000 euros per person for 12 months.

If this type of budget seems large, you should know that it implies a lot of expenses to take into account, not only during your world tour but also before and after!

In

your budget for a world tour, you should first of all take into account the costs to be paid before your trip. These include equipment as well as plane tickets and potential visas.

The cost of the vaccines to be taken into accountBefore

anything else, find out about the countries you wish to visit, you may need to get certain vaccines. The number of vaccines you will need depends on the number of vaccines you have already received, the countries you will be visiting and the risk you are willing to take. In some tropical countries, certain vaccines are mandatory. For example, yellow fever is mandatory if you want to visit the rainforests of Colombia. However, you should know that this vaccine is free at the Bogota airport. To learn more about vaccines, you can consult our complete file on travel vaccinations.

Not all vaccines are necessarily reimbursed by social security. The only ones that are reimbursed are :

  • Hepatitis B
  • Measles, mumps and rubella
  • Diphtheria, tetanus, pertussis and polio.

For the others, some mutual insurance companies take them into account, otherwise you will have to pay for them yourself. In general, travelers around the world spend about 200 euros for vaccines.

To get your vaccinations, you can opt for an international vaccination center or a hospital which are generally less expensive than the Pasteur Institute or the Air France vaccination center.

To give you an idea of the prices, here are the average rates for some

types of vaccines :

  • Meningitis: 32 euros
  • Hepatitis A: 22 euros
  • Pneumococcus: 12 euros
  • Japanese encephalitis: 86 euros
  • Yellow fever: 38 euros
  • Rabies: 29 euros
  • Flu: 3 euros
  • Tick-borne encephalitis: 35 euros
  • Typhoid: 12 euros.

Health insurance: an indispensable part of travel

During a trip, the social security does not take into account the health expenses incurred abroad. If some bank cards can insure you for certain events, this is only done for the first 3 months of travel. Thus, it is strongly recommended to take a travel insurance.

On average, a globetrotter spends 400 euros on travel insurance for a 12 month stay. The majority of insurances will then cover you for :

  • Medical expenses
  • Repatriation,
  • Legal assistance,
  • Death,
  • Disability,
  • Search and rescue expenses,
  • Civil liability,
  • Luggage,
  • Cancellation,
  • Early return.

Nevertheless, the rate of coverage, the rates or the events taken into account depend strongly on the insurance chosen. I advise you to choose an insurance that you can personalize and that adapts to both your type of stay and your mobility. Chapka Assurance has the advantage of covering mishaps during a trip of a few days or weeks, to accompany you if you are more than 10 people or in search of a trip around the world over 1 year.

The essential equipment to include in your world tour budget

This budget for your world tour depends strongly on the equipment you already own. For an unequipped person, it is necessary to count approximately 600 euros of equipment. Among the most purchased travel equipment and accessories, you will find :

  • Computer/tablet: 250 to 1,500 euros.

Bank fees (which can be reduced)

Some banks charge fees for withdrawals or payments abroad. If for a few weeks of travel this can be bearable, in the long term, it can create a real hole in your world tour budget. Your round-the-world plane tickets

Airline tickets are an important part of a round-the-world budget. In fact, on average, a traveler will spend 3,100 euros on economy class airfare over an 11-month period. On the other hand, a long term traveler, not doing a round the world trip, will spend 1,100 euros in economy class for 7 months of travel. However, this budget will greatly depend on how you buy your tickets.

The round-the-world air ticket

Some airline alliances offer round-the-world air tickets: you buy all your tickets and you can change the date of the flights for free, only the destination is unchangeable. Among the biggest alliances you will find : Sky Team, Emirates, One World or Star Alliance.

The price of this type of solution will vary depending on the alliance, the number of tickets or the destinations. However, it is necessary to count between 2 500 and 4 500 euros for a round-the-world ticket.

The specialized travel agency

Some travel agencies are specialized in the purchase of tickets for a world tour. Among the most reputable, we find: Travel Nation or Zip World. They will look for the cheapest tickets by combining the offers of alliances and tickets of other companies in order to fit in your world tour budget.

Moreover, the consultants can advise you on your itinerary in order to reduce the cost of the different air tickets or even add a few destinations for a small additional fee.

Prices for this type of service start at around 1,500 euros for very basic round-the-world tickets. These prices can even be less expensive for multi-destination tickets on one or two continents.

Buy as you go

If you are not yet sure of your destinations or of the time you wish to spend in each country or even if you wish to try to reduce your airfare as much as possible, you can choose to buy your tickets as you go along. Be careful though, you will have to be very organized to buy your tickets in advance so that you don’t have to pay the full price. In this type of case, it is advisable to use several price comparison websites as well as

I use a VPN so that I always have the best deals and that they don’t increase every time you search.

For my part, I use the Ulysses application to monitor airfare prices. This platform offers you a prediction of the evolution of ticket prices for a given destination and date and can even send you a notification when the price is as low as possible.

The vehicle for a round trip around the worldSome

travelers prefer to have their own vehicle rather than using public transportation or airplanes. In these cases, there are two options: renting or buying. In the first case, the price will depend primarily on each country. In the second case, you can choose from several options: bicycle, van, motorcycle, 4×4, truck or sailboat.

The budget for this type of purchase depends greatly on the type and condition of the vehicle. For example, for a bike with all the equipment, you can count between 500 and 6 000 euros. For a motor vehicle, the prices are even more variable. It can range from 2,000 euros for an old van fitted out to almost 300,000 euros for a top-of-the-range 4×4 truck.
